Amazon Takes Marvel, ABC Shows for India

The company will stream for its Indian subscribers such shows as Marvel’s ‘Inhumans’ and ‘Runaways’ and ABC’s ‘The Crossing’ and ‘Station 19.’

Amazon Prime Video and Disney India on Wednesday unveiled an exclusive content deal that will allow Amazon to stream seven new and upcoming shows from Marvel and ABC in India immediately after they premiere in the U.S.

The deal, financial terms of which weren’t disclosed, covers Marvel series Cloak and Dagger, Inhumans and Runaways, as well as ABC series  The Crossing, Station 19 and Freeform’s Alone Together. The deal also covers past seasons of ABC hit series Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, Desperate Housewives, Scandal and Scrubs.

“It’s critical for us to make our diverse content available to fans everywhere,” said Disney India regional head, media distribution and OTT Amrita Pandey, adding, “This opportunity with Amazon Prime Video in India allows us to bring some of our fan favorite shows from Marvel and ABC to Indian audiences on a device of their choice and convenience.”

Last year, Disney said that it would end a licensing deal with Netflix and launch its own streaming service. Since Netflix launched in India in January 2016, the service has been streaming such Disney content as Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Defenders and Iron Fist. Rival streaming service Hotstar, which is owned by 21st Century Fox’s Star India network, includes such Disney movies as Lucasfilm’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in addition to Doctor Strange and Captain America.

For Amazon India, the Disney pact builds on the streaming service’s earlier content deals with Warner Bros., Paramount and Lionsgate, boosting its Hollywood offerings for its India subscribers.
