Mark Hamill has expressed interest in joining Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and it looks like director James Gunn is on board as well. The threequel is still in the early stages of development, with filming not expected to begin until early next year as it reportedly targets a summer 2020 release date. The Guardians will be onscreen plenty in the meantime, of course, as they’re set to appear in both Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel. If Vol. 3 does end up making it into theaters in 2020, that’ll make it the fourth year in a row that Star-Lord, Gamora, and the gang graced the big screen.
Since Guardians of the Galaxy 3 remains so far down the pipeline, very little is known about the project as of now. Last October, Gunn confirmed that the first draft of the script was nearly complete, as was the film’s mixtape collection, but we know next to nothing about the storyline itself. Hell, we’re not even sure if Adam Warlock is going to appear.

One thing we can say for sure about the third Guardians movie is that Mark Hamill is interested in signing on. After a fan reached out to Gunn on Twitter to ask if he could find a role for Hamill in the threequel, Gunn responded that he’d be open to meeting with the Star Wars icon to discuss it. That’s when Hamill joined in on the conversation, saying that he “would be happy to do so, both as a good neighbor & an unemployed actor.” Things actually got even more interesting from there:

Obviously, this is a far cry from any sort of confirmation that Hamill will be joining the MCU in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. It’s entirely possible that Gunn already has the story worked out, and that it doesn’t feature a part that’s well-suited for the man formerly known as Luke Skywalker. Still, both parties seemed legitimately interested in teaming up, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Hamill were worked into the film in some capacity. It would certainly make for an epic pairing, that’s for sure.
If there’s a lesson to be learned here, clearly it’s to always follow your dreams. This brave Twitter user reached out to a famous director with his heart in his hand, and it looks like he may just be rewarded for his courage. We salute you, good sir.
Do you think Mark Hamill would make for an excellent addition to the Vol. 3 cast? Who would you like to see him play? Sound off in the comments.
