In the 90 years of the Academy Awards, Daniel Day-Lewis holds the record for most wins for the category with three.
To celebrate 90 years of the Academy Awards, The Hollywood Reporter is bringing together every best actor winner in the history of the show in under 90 seconds. While Emil Jannings was the first recipient of the award for his role in The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh in 1929, back when actors could be nominated for multiple performances, Casey Affleck was the latest actor to take home the award for his performance in Manchester By the Sea.
Throughout his career, Daniel Day-Lewis has won three best actor Oscars, holding the record for the men’s category, for his roles in My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown in 1989, There Will Be Blood in 2007 and Lincoln in 2012.
While there have been 89 actors who have received the honor throughout the years, there have only been two stars who have won back-to-back years: Spencer Tracy in 1938 for Captains Courageous and again in 1939 for Boys Town; and Tom Hanks in 1993 for his role in Philadelphia and then in 1994 for Forrest Gump.
