The future Mrs. Poppins Emily Blunt glided down Sunday night’s Oscars red carpet looking like a spoonful of sugar in her aqua gown and matching aquamarine accessories—and her stylist Jessica Paster gave PEOPLE the exclusive scoop on how the look came to be.
“We wanted to go for a whimsical, ethereal look that had a little edge,” her stylist Jessica Paster tells PEOPLE of how they landed on the Schiaparelli Haute Couture look the presenter wore, adding that she was drawn to the soft hue because “it looked especially stunning against her blue eyes.”

The pale blue gown, which was made with aqua silk polka dot tulle and lace and then embellished with a floral leather harness, is part of the house’s Spring 2018 Couture collection, and made its debut on the runway just several weeks earlier during Couture Fashion Week in Paris in January.

In fact, Paster prefers pulling dresses off the runway, rather than doing custom pieces, as stars such as Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Garner, Margot Robbie and more did at the Oscars. “I really enjoy the process of pulling,” says the stylist. “I get nervous with custom.” Plus, “who doesn’t love a little leather and lace?”

It took three fittings to get the ensemble just right, Paster notes. “Fittings with Emily are always fun and a laugh,” says the stylist.

Topping off the look: $250,000 worth of Chopard jewels, including earrings with 30.96-carats of pear-shaped aquamarines set in blue titanium and diamonds and two rings—one with a 12.92-carat aquamarine set in diamonds and the other with a 5.11-carat pear-shaped aquamarine with an amethyst, diamonds and tanzanite surrounding it. “They were still classic but had a freshness to the pieces,” Paster says of how she chose the glittering gems.

When it came to the shoes, she went with a matching aqua blue velvet Sophia Webster style that stood out because of its crystal heel and a Judith Leiber clutch. “I selected each piece carefully to help make the overall look.” (Nab a pink version for $495 on net-a-porter.com.)

Before heading out the door, Blunt applied a final swipe of Laura Mercier lipstick to complete the “timeless but modern” beauty look makeup artist Jenn Streicher created.
