The 33rd annual ceremony took place in Santa Monica on Saturday.
I, Tonya‘s Allison Janney took home the award for best supporting female at the Spirit Awards on Saturday.
Janney brought a ripped piece of paper on stage for her acceptance speech, saying, “This is — instead of what the millennials do, you come up and bring your phone, I wrote on the back of my itinerary.”
The I, Tonya actress thanked producers and the film’s creative team. “It was their fearless and intrepid nature that made it possible for this film to get made. They had the scrappiness and audacity to say ‘Yes, we can shoot 256 scenes in 32 days. Yes, we can do hair and makeup spanning 20 years of looks and prosthetics and CGI.'”
Janney continued, “It is that kind of spirit that represents the best of independent filmmaking, and by giving me this, you honor them as well.”
She beat out The Big Sick‘s Holly Hunter, Lady Bird‘s Laurie Metcalf, Marjorie Prime‘s Lois Smith, and Good Time‘s Taliah Lennice Webster.
Janney has won a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild award, Critics Choice award and more for her role in I, Tonya.
Metcalf’s and Janney’s nominations were a departure from last year, when none of the nominated actresses received recognition in the Academy’s equivalent category.
John Mulaney and Nick Kroll hosted the 33rd Film Independent Spirit Awards, which took place in Santa Monica on Saturday.
