Artist Depicts Best Picture Nominees as Oscar Statues

Artist Olly Gibbs has given the 2018 Best Picture nominees an Oscars statuette makeover. Since 2014, Gibbs has been releasing stylized statuettes representing all of the Best Picture nominees, and this year’s reveal is just as impressive as the rest.

This year, nine of 2017’s most acclaimed releases will be battling for the top honor handed out by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Among those films are Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, and Jordan Peele’s Get Out, among others. Though fans tuning into the 90th Academy Awards will have their favorites for the Best Picture category, all of the nominees have gotten their time to shine in the run up to the awards show – whether with satirical Oscars nomination posters or Screen Junkies’ Honest Trailer Oscars 2018 edition.

An award-winning digital and print designer for Empire Magazine, Gibbs has spent the past four years recreating Best Picture Oscar nominees as Oscar statuettes for fun. The designs are minimalist, with shreds of detail personalizing each statuette per their respective films. He dresses the Oscar in clothing similar to the film’s main character, then uses the base of the statuette to sprinkle in various details or objects corresponding to the movie (for example: the Phantom Thread statuette doubles as a spool of yarn, along with a needle and measuring tape). According to his website, Gibbs explains that, “Each one tries to be as iconic as each of the films.”

In previous years, some of his statuettes weren’t quite as obvious as they are in this batch. For example, in 2015, the designs for Selma and The Imitation Game were much more subtle, which made them more difficult to figure out (the Selma Oscar is dressed in an ordinary suit and tie, while the Imitation Game Oscar is wearing pants, a dress shirt, and suspenders). So, in case you’re having trouble pinning down a trophy from this year with its respective movie, here they are from the top left: Dunkirk, Get Out, The Post, Darkest Hour, The Shape Of Water, Phantom Thread, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Lady Bird, and Call Me By Your Name

On his personal Twitter account, he tweeted, “Background on this: Started creating these a few years ago as a fun personal project and have continued doing so as a way of style and skill development. Always great seeing how many people enjoy them. Next step is to get them made into 3D models!” So, if all goes as planned, maybe Gibbs’ Oscars will give Funko Pop! figures a run for their money.

Though fans may have their favorite of Gibbs’ Oscars illustrations – and a favorite in the Oscars race – they’ll have to tune into the awards show this weekend to see how many golden statues each of the films take home.
