Five years after being named the highest-paid actress in Hollywood over 40, Cameron Diaz is calling it quits. The 45-year-old has reportedly retired, but there just may be a Hollywood twist.
It’s been nearly a quarter-century since Diaz made her feature film debut in 1994’s The Mask. Playing opposite Jim Carrey, the actress was suddenly a hot topic of pop culture conversations, and she maintained a steady working career throughout the 90s, culminating in arguably her most iconic role as the title character in the Farrelly Brothers’ 1998 comedy There’s Something About Mary. Not only is the film widely regarded as one of cinema’s most hilarious productions, but Diaz also earned critical acclaim for her performance as well, leading to starring roles the following year in Spike Jonze’s Being John Malkovich and Oliver Stone’s Any Given Sunday. With her on-screen charisma and unique knack for comedy, Diaz unsurprisingly became a legit Hollywood A-lister with her 2000s filmography, featuring a popular voice acting role as Princess Fiona in the Shrek franchise.

According to EW, Diaz recently stated that she’s “actually retired” from acting. The comments were published during an interview with Diaz and her co-stars from the 2002 film The Sweetest Thing, Christina Applegate and Selma Blair. The actresses conversed about the film’s raunchy humor, and how it inspired modern comedies like Bridesmaids and Girls Trip. Near the end of the interview, the actresses discussed their work schedules and a possible reunion, with Applegate noting that she’s “semi-retired.” In response, Diaz identified herself as both “semi-retired” and “’actually retired,” too.
The latest Diaz report comes two weeks after Blair confirmed her friend’s retirement. Over the years, Diaz has never made an official public statement about her career status, and she’s definitely lost momentum after not appearing in a single film since 2014’s The Other Woman, Sex Tape and the big screen adaptation of Annie. Since then, she has reportedly been enjoying married life with Good Charlotte musician Benji Madden.
Given Diaz’s firm stance on retirement, it seems that she’s content with life after Hollywood. But whereas athletes retire because they’re physically unable to compete at the highest level, entertainers often temporarily retire because of personal life changes. Considering that Diaz is only 45 years old, and clearly has strong connections in Hollywood, one could argue that it’s only a matter of time until she’s back in the spotlight. Maybe, just maybe, platforms like HBO, Netflix or Amazon will come calling with a lucrative deal, one that Diaz might not be able to refuse.
