Oscar-nominated composer John Powell will receive the Henry Mancini Award at the ASCAP Screen Music Awards on May 23 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
The award, the highest honor the performing rights organization bestows on a composer, has previously been given to such esteemed composers as Hans Zimmer, John Debney, Howard Shore, Randy Newman, Alan Silvestri, James Newton Howard and Quincy Jones.
The British-born composer, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2011 for his score for How to Train Your Dragon, has written the music for more than 50 films, including Shrek (with Harry Gregson-Williams), Happy Feet, Ice Age, The Bourne Identity and Ferdinand.
Powell, 54, also scored the forthcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story, director Ron Howard’s entry into the Star Wars universe, which opens May 25. Powell will score How to Train Your Dragon 3, which is slated for release in 2019.
