Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are confirmed to direct DC’s Flashpoint movie. The Flash solo movie was first announced in 2014 as part of Warner Bros.’ initial slate of films for their unofficially titled DC Extended Universe, with a release date that was tentatively planned for March 2018. It was supposed to be the first movie to release after Zack Snyder’s Justice League hit theaters in November 2017.
Unfortunately, The Flash solo movie suffered numerous delays behind the scenes – most notably, directors Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa both departed the DCEU film in 2016 – and it was removed from Warner Bros.’ schedule indefinitely, thus leaving that planned release date open for WB’s Tomb Raider reboot to swoop in. The studio had started courting various directors to helm the film in 2017, and they finally landed on Goldstein and Daley earlier this year. WB was especially interested in the pair after they achieved critical acclaim for writing the story for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming as well as directing WB’s latest comedy, Game Night. Unfortunately, the deal between them and the studio wasn’t finalized… until now.

John Francis Daley posted a gif on Twitter of Flash running with the caption reading, “It’s happening!,” thus confirming that he and Jonathan Goldstein have finalized their deal with Warner Bros. and will officially be directing DC’s Flashpoint movie, starring Ezra Miller as Barry Allen, aka Flash. This news comes on the heels of The Flash solo film reportedly being scheduled to start filming later this year after Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 2 gets underway. It will be based on DC’s Flashpoint comic book crossover series from 2011 – written by current DC Films co-chief Geoff Johns – which follows Flash as he travels back in time and prevents the Reverse-Flash from murdering his mother, thus sending the entire DC Universe into an alternate timeline, known as Flashpoint, in which the Amazons and Atlanteans are at war, Kal-El never became Superman, and Thomas Wayne was Batman, amongst other things.
The Flashpoint comic is beloved by DC Comics fans, but it seems like a strange movie to start with right out the gate. However, it seems that WB doesn’t plan on adapting the comic directly, but rather use it as an inspiration for their live-action film. According to recent reports, WB’s Flashpoint movie will feature Flash’s iconic rogues gallery – including Reverse-Flash, Captain Cold, and Caitlin Snow (who may transform into Killer Frost) – with Doctor Light as the film’s big bad. Evil versions of Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Aquaman (Jason Momoa) are also expected to appear in the film, with Ben Affleck possibly reprising his role as Batman potentially for the last time. It’s unclear, though, if Jeffrey Dean Morgan will appear in the film as Thomas Wayne/Batman (thus reprising his role from Batman V Superman), but it’s certainly something that fans want to see and definitely something that Morgan wants to happen.
If Flashpoint finally does enter production this year, it’s possible that the film may snag one of WB’s 2020 release dates. But the film’s production schedule depends entirely upon what Goldstein and Daley plan on doing with the film’s current script, which was recently rewritten by King Arthur scribe Joby Harold. If the duo plans on rewriting parts of the script themselves, then there might be a slight delay in getting the film off the ground. If not, then Flashpoint might actually start rolling cameras this fall.
