Sony has set an official theatrical release date for The Crow movie reboot, starring Jason Momoa as murdered rock guitarist turned vengeful antihero Eric Draven. The big screen relaunch of James O’Barr’s comic book story turned film series has gone through too many actors, directors, and script drafts over the past decade to summarize fully here. For related reasons, fans of the supernatural property were highly skeptical when Momoa attached himself to the project in the summer of 2016, suspecting that he too would eventually drop out.
He didn’t, however, and now the Game of Thrones, Frontier, and Aquaman actor is gearing up to start filming The Crow in Budapest, Hungary this year, under the direction of Corin Hardy (The Hallow). Sony picked up the project last fall after the film stalled in development at Relativity Media, following its bankruptcy. The former studio doesn’t intend to sit around and do nothing with the franchise either, as evidenced by its release date announcement today.

The Crow is now scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on October 11, 2019. Other films currently set to open in theaters that same day include MGM’s animated The Addams Family movie (featuring Oscar Isaac as the voice of Gomez Addams), Paramount’s big screen adaptation of the 1990s Nickelodeon TV series Are You Afraid of the Dark, and Warner Bros.’ big screen adaptation of the best-selling novel The Goldfinch (starring Baby Driver‘s Ansel Elgort).
Director Alex Proyas first brought The Crow property to the big screen in 1994, casting Brandon Lee (who was tragically killed during filming by a defective blank) as Eric: a musician who returns from the dead to exact revenge on the men responsible for brutally murdering him and his girlfriend. The film became a cult success thanks to its stylishly Gothic aesthetic and Lee’s memorable performance (among other factors), but subsequent movie sequels and a TV spinoff failed to scale the same artistic heights. For that reason, many Crow fans have been highly skeptical of a film reboot from the get-go, its pre-production woes aside.
Momoa, however, have proven himself to be a magnetic screen presence even when the movie or TV show around him is subpar and his star shouldn’t stop rising anytime soon, what with his role in James Wan’s Aquaman right around the corner. Hardy similarly earned critical kudos for the horror/thriller The Hallow (his feature debut) and could breakout later this year, when his Conjuring spinoff The Nun hits theaters. The Nun has been likened to a Hammer Horror film by its writer, suggesting that Hardy might well be the right man to revive The Crow for contemporary audiences.
