John Boyega is hoping for longer fight scenes for Finn in Star Wars 9. As Lucasfilm successfully relaunched Star Wars in 2015, they did so by securing multiple talented leads. While nostalgia pointed to many wanting to see what Luke, Han, and Leia had been up to, The Force Awakens introduced and focused on its new leads. Boyega filled one of those roles as Finn, where he had excellent chemistry with both Daisy Ridley (Rey) and Oscar Isaac (Poe). After a breakout role, fans were understandably eager to see how he’d continue on in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Instead of once again being a favorite part, Finn’s arc was the subject of much scrutiny. His mission to Canto Bight felt out of place to some and not everyone bought into his relationship with newcomer Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran). Finn’s story ultimately left viewers wanting more, especially when it came to the action. Boyega tends to agree and is hoping that changes in Episode IX.

While speaking to IGN, Boyega was asked about Finn’s role in The Last Jedi and specifically his fight with Phasma. The encounter was heavily used in the marketing, but was rather quick in the final product. It also led to what appears to be Phasma’s death. Audiences were surprised by the short battle, and so was Boyega.
Yeah, man, I didn’t expect it to be that quick if I’m being honest with you. I was like, wait, wait, what? He’s been like ramped up for a big fight and then it was over in a second. [laughs] But, hopefully, Finn gets to face someone else or has a fight that’s much longer by the way [in Episode IX].
There’s no denying that Finn was much more hands on when it came to his role in The Force Awakens. In his debut, audiences got to see him really get in on the action. He had the showdown with a fellow stormtrooper, and even got to wield a lightsaber on multiple occasions. He really just has the one action scene in The Last Jedi, so its understandable why fans (and even Boyega) could’ve been a tad disappointed.
When it comes to Finn’s role in Episode IX however, it’s way too early to tell what his role will be. So little is actually known about the movie at this stage – Abrams just finished the script – that it’s really impossible to say what comes next. Many expect there to be a time jump of a few years, with the events of the movie then seeing Kylo Ren’s strengthened First Order square off once more with a Resistance that has a much bigger army. Even without knowing the story points, the battle of good vs evil will continue and should give Finn a couple of opportunities to join the fight. That is under the assumption Star Wars 9 will be a big war, and that Finn won’t be off on a side adventure again.
