John Cena Wants a Fast & Furious Team-up With Dwayne Johnson

John Cena wants to reunite with his former wrestling rival Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson on the big screen, via the Fast & Furious movies. Johnson has successfully made the transition to the Hollywood A-list since he left his wrestling days behind him, and now Cena wants to do the same. Cena has already proven that, like The Rock, he has a knack for comedy, with scene-stealing appearances in films like Trainwreck, Sisters, and Daddy’s Home 1 & 2 under his belt. He’s even tried his hand at drama/action with Doug Liman’s The Wall and voiced the titular flower-loving bull in last year’s animated Ferdinand, to mostly successful results.

Cena’s next appearance on the big screen will be in April’s Blockers, a raunchy comedy that’s already generating great buzz following its premiere at SXSW 2018 earlier this month. He will also costar with Hailee Steinfeld in December’s Transformers spinoff Bumblebee and is lending his voice to both the animated TV series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and next year’s Robert Downey Jr. headlined Voyage of Doctor Dolittle. The wrestler is also taking a leaf from The Rock’s book by attaching himself to an upcoming video game movie, in the form of Duke Nukem.

Speaking with EW, Cena further expressed a desire to team up with Johnson on the Fast & Furious movie series. He also dismissed his previous complaints that Johnson turned his back on the WWE as being “stupid” and said that he feels the pair’s dynamic in the ring could translate well onto the big screen:

“That stuff is beyond my control, but I would absolutely love that opportunity. That, for me, would be a dream. I’m never really like, ‘Oh, I’d like to work with this person,’ but I just think between our chemistry in the live performance setting, there’s something certainly there with The Rock. So that would be my one name on the wish list.”

Johnson joined the Fast & Furious series in 2011’s Fast Five and his character, Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs, helped to catapult the franchise into the billion dollar global phenomenon that it is today. The Hobbs character is even getting his own spinoff movie in 2019, with Jason Statham reprising his role as British military officer-turned mercenary Deckard Shaw for the as-yet untitled film.

The idea for the Hobbs spinoff was partly born out of the great chemistry that Johnson and Statham had with one another in last year’s The Fate of the Furious, as onscreen frenemies. That doesn’t leave much room for Cena in the picture, as far as the idea of him playing a buddy duo with The Rock goes. At the same time, the Fast & Furious movies have become known for including fun appearances by big name fighters turned actors like Gina Carano, Ronda Rousey, and technically The Rock himself. A similar cameo by Cena would make perfect sense for the series, in that regard.
