Little Mix have responded to the sexist criticism they often face, with singer Jade Thirlwall delivering an empowering speech at last night’s Global Awards.
The first-ever Global Awards took place on Thursday night (March 1) at London’s Hammersmith Apollo.
The group took home three prizes over the course of the evening – for Best Group, Best Artist and Best Song.
Accepting their award for Best Artist, Thirlwall said: “It’s obviously quite hard for women in the music industry. It’s also hard for girl groups. It think the fact that we’ve managed to last nearly seven years now and still be going strong is amazing, and we have a lot of people to thank for that.”
She continued: “As a girl band, and as women, we do face a lot of scrutiny all the time, whether it’s for the way we look, how much thigh we get out, how we dance, what we sing about. And we just want to say that, although one day we hope that does stop, right now we’re really not arsed what people think.”
“We are women. We’ll dress how we want to dress. If we want to do a twerk, we’ll do a twerk… We will always encourage our fans, especially our female fans, to be themselves and do whatever they want to do”.

Last month saw Jesy Nelson accused of cultural appropriation after sporting dreadlocks in an Instagram photo.
After sharing the snap, some fans accused Nelson of “textbook” cultural appropriation, arguing that her borrowing from black culture is “offensive”.
One fan wrote: “Jesy, hun, I love you, but please take this down or write an apology. It may have not been thought about at the time, but this is cultural appropriation. I’m not hating and you do look beautiful, but this hairstyle isn’t meant for you.”
