Mark Hamill refuses to believe that Luke Skywalker actually died in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but rather that he teleported somewhere else. While Hamill’s fifth appearance as Luke in the eighth chapter of the Skywalker saga is arguably his best as the Jedi Master, who started out his iconic journey as a simple Tatooine farm boy, many fans were upset with the character’s ultimate fate at the end of Rian Johnson’s film.
Luke’s exit came, of course, at the end of the thrilling third act of The Last Jedi. After opening up to the Force again and creating creating a hologram of his younger self to fight Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), in order to create a distraction so that the surviving members of the Resistance could escape, Luke’s physical being disappeared, thus leaving behind nothing but his Jedi robes to fly away into the wind. It’s presumed that Luke died, but Hamill has another theory.

In an interview with the BBC, Mark Hamill briefly discussed Luke Skywalker’s fateful moment in The Last Jedi, refusing to believe that his character is truly dead. He said: “I refuse to believe that he’s gone. My theory is he just teleported to somewhere else and left his robe behind. He teleported to a nudist colony, that’s what I’m hoping.”
Hamill was most likely speaking in jest, as he’s known to do quite often on social media. However, his comments about Luke teleporting aren’t that far-fetched. As fans might recall, Disney XD’s Star Wars Rebels recently made teleportation canon in the Star Wars saga, so it’s theoretically possible for Luke to still be alive and having only teleported somewhere off-screen in The Last Jedi. If that’s, in fact, the case, it’s still unlikely that Luke would’ve teleported to a nudist colony.
No matter Hamill’s belief, it’s not far-fetched for anyone even vaguely familiar with the Star Wars saga to believe that Luke will return in some form in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode IX. Given how Luke disappeared the same way Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) and Yoda (voice of Frank Oz) both disappeared in A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, respectively, it’s certainly plausible that Hamill will return as Luke at least one more time in Episode IX as a Force ghost. After all, when Obi-Wan and Yoda vanished, they left behind their robes, too. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens when Episode IX rolls around, but for now, Hamill’s theory about Luke teleporting in The Last Jedi is, again, now possible in the Star Wars saga.
