The duo returned to host the award show on Saturday.
Nick Kroll and John Mulaney did not hold back while hosting the 33rd annual Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon.
The comedians opened the award show that celebrates independent films, which takes place in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica, with jokes targeted at disgraced men, including Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Woody Allen and Louis C.K.
“This is the only award show where your Uber X driver is nervous to drop you off at it,” Mulaney said. Kroll followed up with, “Independent Spirit sounds like the way you would compliment someone who’s kind of hard to compliment.”
It’s no surprise that the hosts reflected on the sexual misconduct claims that rocked Hollywood this past year. “Last year everyone famous died. This year everyone famous wishes they were dead,” Mulaney said. Mulaney and Kroll then followed up by sharing past questionable interactions they had with Weinstein and Brett Ratner, who was also accused of inappropriate behavior.
Following jokes centering on sexual harassment, Mulaney and Kroll moved on to “lighter” topics. “Jordan [Peele], I’ve gotta say, man, I loved Get Out, but I gotta be honest: It kind of ruined being white for me,” Kroll told the film’s director. “Pretty bummed out about it now. It’s like Lady Bird, Black Panther. It’s like women, people of color,” he said. “What have you left for us white males? Everything. We still basically control everything.”
Mulaney then brought up Call Me by Your Name. “You know who’s like in love with Timothee Chalamet? My wife. And it hurts my feelings,” said Mulaney of the young star. “Timothee, by the way, thanks for taking a break from the gas station to come over here to the awards,” added Kroll, critiquing Chalamet’s shirt.
The hosts also reflected on I, Tonya. Mulaney explained the plot of a possible sequel for the film. “It’s called I, Nancy. It’s about a nice lady who gets her knee bashed in by some trailer park assassin and then 25 years later has to see a great award-winning movie about how she’s not the victim,” he joked. “We’re kidding. We don’t care that much about Nancy Kerrigan.”
“We’ll admit, guys, there are times that we wish the election had gone the other way,” Kroll said. “When things are this weird in the country, people come up to us as comedians and they go, ‘Man, you can’t write this stuff,'” added Mulaney. “Yeah, you could. But you wouldn’t want to, and no one would want to see it.”
The Independent Spirit Awards aired on IFC on Saturday, March 3. Nick Kroll and John Mulaney also hosted the 2017 ceremony.
