Director Guillermo del Toro’s best picture and best director wins had everyone talking on social media last night.
The Oscars may be the biggest night for the movie industry, but everyone sitting at home on social media make it a huge evening for Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Just like at the awards ceremony, Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water dominated online, with a few outliers.
Across all three platforms, the top moment of the Academy Awards was The Shape of Water’s best picture win. Close behind were Jordan Peele with his win for Get Out and Frances McDormand’s best actress speech. Peele went home with both an Oscar for best original screenplay and the most retweeted tweet of the night. It currently has over 138,000 retweets and over 700,000 likes.
I just won an Oscar. WTF?!?

On both Twitter and Facebook, fans were taken with the “Remember Me” performance from Coco and the writers’ subsequent win for best original song. On Facebook, Walt Disney Studios’ congratulations post for the animated film remained the most loved post throughout the night. It has over 3,000 reactions.
Some of the biggest winners on social media didn’t actually take home a prize. Timothee Chalamet was in the most-liked photo on Instagram and had the top red carpet look on Twitter. The screenwriter for his movie, Call Me By Your Name, won best adapted screenplay, but Chalamet lost best actor to Gary Oldman. The Instagram photo was a selfie with presenter Ansel Elgort, who was in Oscar nominated film Baby Driver, and Chalamet’s co-star Armie Hammer. So far, it has earned nearly one million likes.
Call Me By Your Name was the third most buzzed about film on Instagram, while Lady Bird was the fourth despite winning none of the awards it was up for. The top two were The Shape of Water and Get Out.
Chadwick Boseman had the second most tweeted about red carpet look, but he wasn’t up for any awards this year. The same goes for Boseman’s fellow Marvel superhero, Tom Holland, who plays Spider-man. Holland presented the award for best visual effects and came in third on Twitter. Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther co-star, Lupita Nyong’o’s look was the fourth most tweeted about and Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon clocked in at No. 5.
These stars may have had the most tweeted about looks, but Gal Gadot had the most liked video of the night on Instagram, revealing her final ensemble. The video currently has more than three million views.
As for during the awards, former NBA star and brand new Oscar winner, Kobe Bryant, received the most tweets. It’s no surprise that big winner Guillermo del Toro came in second with Meryl Streep and Jordan Peele right behind him. Best actor winner Gary Oldman was the fifth most tweeted about. Oldman faired a little better on Facebook, where his win earned him the second spot.
The Shape of Water may have cleaned up at the Academy Awards, but fan-favorites like Call Me By Your Name, Lady Bird and Get Out still shone on social media. After last year’s envelope mishap, making it out of the 2018 Oscars unscathed was the real prize.
