Each year, the Oscars ceremony includes a moving tribute to the film industry leaders who died in the past year — and each year, big names are left out from the prestigious lineup. This time, the Academy excluded multiple former Oscar winners — Dorothy Malone, who won best supporting actress for her portrayal of an alcoholic in Written on the Wind (1956) and Glen Campbell, who starred in True Grit (1969) and earned a best original song nomination.
Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder performed Tom Petty’s “Room at the Top” in a tribute to the singer, who died in October. As he sang, the In Memoriam segment honored actors, singers, and filmmakers like Harry Dean Stanton and Jerry Lewis. But many notable names didn’t make the cut. Raging Bull and The Sopranos actor Frank Vincent was nowhere to be seen, and neither was The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Poltergeist director Tobe Hooper.
Other notable missing names include The Help and The Butler‘s Nelsan Ellis, Emmy winner and Sin City star Powers Boothe, gospel singer and Harlem Nights actress Della Reese, The Lion King actor Robert Guillaume, The Iron Giant‘s and Frasier‘s John Mahoney, and House of Cards and The Wire actor Reg E. Cathey.
Though he died a day before the Oscars ceremony, David Ogden Stiers, the M*A*S*H star who voiced Cogsworth in the 1991 Beauty and The Beast, also didn’t make an appearance.
Even Adam West, the real-life Batman, didn’t make the cut.
