Oscars: Kumail Nanjiani and Lupita Nyong’o Send Message of Solidarity to Dreamers

“And to all the Dreamers out there, we stand with you.”

Lupita Nyong’o and Kumail Nanjiani, who were on-hand to present the Oscar for best production design on Sunday night, gave a shout-out to Dreamers amid the ongoing immigration debate in America.

“We are dreamers. We grew up dreaming of one day working in the movies. Dreams are the foundation of America,” the Black Panther actress, who is from Kenya, said. Nanjiani, who is from Pakistan and Iowa, added, “And to all the Dreamers out there, we stand with you.”

Introducing the performance for best original song nominee “Remember Me” from Coco, Eugenio Derbez added, “In the afterworld, there are no walls.”

Earlier in the ceremony, host Jimmy Kimmel took other shots at President Trump, joking that Trump very much liked the first three quarters of Get Out. Kimmel later worked in a joke about Hope Hicks quitting her position as communications director last week.  “Where there is light, there is always hope. Except at the White House. Hope quit on Wednesday,” Kimmel said.

Nanjiani and wife Emily V. Gordon’s original screenplay for The Big Sick was nominated at the awards, while Nyong’o was on hand to support Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
