Gold was the theme of the night at Jay Z and Beyonce’s inaugural post-Oscars party as music’s reigning king and queen entered the packed party circuit with an uber exclusive bash at Chateau Marmont.
The couple kept a tight leash on invites, selecting around 150 guests for the event, all of whom were reportedly hand picked to hang with Mary J. Blige who was being celebrated for her two nominations, and her Oscar show peformance of “Mighty River.” Blige departed the Vanity Fair after party just after midnight with Diddy, French Montana and Naomi Campbell, all of whom packed in the same SUV to head over to Chateau Marmont.
Some guests reportedly used a private back entrance where they could escape paparazzi as they entered the party which took place in the parking garage converted into a party space. Preparations got underway in the days before the party, but even hotel staffers weren’t aware who was actually hosting the party until that night. Event planners tried to keep any information from leaking to the press. “I gave my dress size so I know that I’ll be wearing something that is just for this party and it’s a special theme,” one hotel staffer told THR three days before the party.
Get Out breakout Lil Rel Howery confirmed to THR that it was, indeed a gold theme — fitting for Hollywood’s biggest night. The actor said he didn’t even receive confirmation of address and other arrival information until Saturday morning. “I can’t believe I was invited, man. The invite arrived in this secretive way, and it read like, yo, you’re invited to this party and you’re coming. Let me know,” he said with a laugh.
Good Time filmmakers the Safdie brothers, Josh and Ben, who directed Jay Z’s video “Marcy Me,” also confirmed to THR that they were headed to party with the power couple. “We have an actual solid connection,” Josh says.
Others who could say the same after Sunday night included Jordan Peele, Drake, Tiffany Haddish, Tracee Ellis Ross, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Shonda Rhimes, Usher, Mindy Kaling, BJ Novak and Angela Bassett.
Meanwhile at Madonna and Guy Oseary’s party, Cardi B. performed a set of songs including her hit “Bodak Yellow” for the A-list crowd at Oseary’s Coldwater Canyon home. To get into party guests were asked to provide a pass with a number of guests as security checked cars to make sure the numbers matched up. Another check point offered the same scenario in an effort to curb any party crashers. “Every nominee was there,” relayed on attendee. “Except for Meryl Streep.”
Inside Kim Kardashian chatted up Cardi B and Madonna, Woody Harrelson cut a rug with Matthew McConaughey, Margot Robbie danced with a group of girlfriends, and guests had five different bars to choose from “so there was never a line at any of them,” continued the source, who added that attendees stuck to the “no phones, no camera” policy.
Also in attendance: Timothee Chalamet who once dated Madonna’s daughter Lourdes.
