Dwayne Johnson gears up to do battle with three giant monsters in the new international posters for his video game movie Rampage. The film is based on the popular gaming property that began as an arcade title in the mid-1980s, and reunites “The Rock” with his Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and San Andreas director Brad Peyton behind the camera.
Reports of New Line and Warner Bros. adapting the Rampage video game for the big screen first popped up in 2011, but the project went on radio silence until Johnson signed on four years later (shortly after San Andreas opened in theaters). The Rampage screenplay is written by Colony TV show creators Carlton Cuse and Ryan J. Condal, who previously collaborated with Johnson as screenwriters on San Andreas and 2014’s Hercules, respectively. Also starring in the film with Johnson are Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead), Malin Akerman (Billions), and Joe Manganiello (Justice League) in leading roles.

The Rampage video games aren’t exactly big on plot, but one constant is that they revolve around three creatures – a giant gorilla, lizard creature, and wolf – wreaking havoc on various cityscapes. All three monsters are featured front and center with Johnson in the Rampage international posters that the actor shared to his social media accounts (see the post embedded below). Johnson also took the time to give a shout-out to Weta Digital, the widely celebrated visuals effects company that helped to bring the CGI monstrosities to life in the movie.

Johnson stars in Rampage as Davis Okoye, a primatologist who prefers the company of his pal George – an unusually intelligent silverback gorilla whom Davis has cared for since he was an infant – over other humans. Everything changes, however, when George is exposed to a mysterious substance that transforms him into a gigantic creature with a short temper and fondness for causing destruction. It thus falls to Davis and a scientist named Kate Caldwell (Harris) to stop not only George, but two other similarly mutated creatures in the forms of an enormous crocodile and a flying wolf.
Rampage will only have a week’s head start before Avengers: Infinity War opens in theaters, but that should be enough time for the video game adaptation to make a dent at the box office. Johnson rarely misses commercially nowadays, and Rampage looks to do a respectable job at itching audiences’ scratch for big, goofy, spectacle-driven entertainment before Thanos and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes duke it out the weekend after. Word of mouth will determine if Rampage has legs beyond that, seeing as the competition is only going to grow fiercer once May gets underway.
