Taran Killam, Leighton Meester, Brad Garrett to Star in ABC Comedy From ‘New Girl’ Team

‘Single Parents’ was created by J.J. Philbin and Liz Meriwether.

ABC has found its Single Parents.

Saturday Night Live alum Taran Killam, Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) and Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond) are set to star in the network’s comedy pilot Single Parents. Killam and Meester both fielded multiple offers this pilot season.

The single-camera comedy revolves around a group of dysfunctional single parents who lean on each other as they raise their kids, look for love and ultimately realize survival is only possible with the help of each other.

Killam will topline the comedy from New Girl‘s J.J. Philbin and Liz Meriwether as Will Cooper, a single and devoted father who has forgotten how to be a man. Meester, who returns to the network and studio 20th Century Fox Television following short-lived Making History, will play the female lead, Angie, a scrappy and strong single mom to an over-attached son. Garrett is set as Douglas, a rich and retired country club member who has an old-school mentality on parenting — and gender roles — who becomes a single father in his 50s and is forced to raise his twin girls solo.

Created by Philbin and Meriwether, the duo co-wrote the script and exec produce alongside New Girl‘s Katherine Pope and Jason Winer, the latter of whom will direct the pilot.

Killam, who most recently filmed Showtime pilot Mating, exited SNL in 2016 after six seasons. This would be his first broadcast series regular scripted role. His credits include Hulu’s animated The Awesomes and an episode of New Girl. He’s repped by UTA and Ziffren Brittenham.

Meester’s TV credits include Fox’s Last Man on Earth, Making History and her long-running role on Gossip Girl. She’s repped by UTA.

Garrett, who recently booked a recurring role on Showtime’s I’m Dying Up Here, counts FX’s Fargo, This Is Us and ABC’s short-lived How to Live With Your Parents among his recent TV credits. The casting brings him back to the studio following CBS’ The Crazy Ones. He’s repped by UTA, Management 360 and Gendler & Kelly.
