The Rock Happily Accepts Baywatch’s Razzie Award

In a weekend in which Hollywood’s biggest creators are all hungering for Oscar gold, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is happy to be going home with a Golden Raspberry. The popular actor claimed the award on behalf of the cast and crew of the movie Baywatch, which earned a single “win” at the 38th Annual Razzie Awards.

Established in 1980 as a satire of The Academy Awards, The Golden Raspberry Awards (or Razzies as they are officially known for short) pay tribute to the worst of the worst that Hollywood has to offer each year. Traditionally, the awards are handed out to unnecessary sequels, overly artistic passion projects and any film where special effects and spectacle are more important than simple storytelling. While always played as something of a joke, The Razzies have achieved a new level of significance in recent years, with A-list actors like Sandra Bullock and Halle Berry showing up to claim their Razzies in person.

The Rock accepted the award in a video posted on his Twitter account, which can be viewed below. Smiling and laughing, The Rock wished luck to his friends who were up for Oscars tonight but noted that he’d already gotten his golden trophy.

As The Rock notes in the video, the specific award that Baywatch won was a special award created specifically for this year’s Razzies. That award was “The Razzie Nominee So Rotten You Loved It” and it was decided by a special vote held in conjunction with movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Baywatch beat out The Emoji Movie, Fifty Shades Darker, Transformers: The Last Knight and The Mummy for the award.

Dwayne Johnson has every right to be laughing over his Golden Raspberry win. While far from a critical darling, The Rock is on solid ground when it comes to his popularity with film goers. His most recent movie – Jumnaji: Welcome To The Jungle – has become Sony Pictures second-highest grossing picture ever, after the James Bond picture Skyfall. The Rock is signed on to appear in the upcoming sequel and the buzz is already strong regarding his next film, Rampage, which is based on the classic video game of the same name. Throw in his casting as the anti-hero Black Adam in several upcoming movies set in the DC Comics universe and it looks like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has a golden ticket to go with his Golden Raspberry.
