Tory MP hits out at Stormzy over “boring” Grenfell comments at BRITs

Tory MP Philip Davies has criticised Stormzy and described the star’s recent comments about Grenfell at the BRIT Awards as “boring”.

Last month saw the grime MC achieve a BRIT Awards double, picking up accolades for British Male Solo Artist and Best British Album.

He then closed the ceremony with a triumphant performance that took aim at Prime Minister Theresa May over her poor handling of the Grenfell Tower fire, which saw 72 people lose their lives.

During a new freestyle, Stormzy delivered the lines: “Theresa May, where’s the money for Grenfell? / What? You thought we just forgot about Grenfell?”.

Stormzy later helped a petition calling for May to take action in the Grenfell Tower inquiry reach its target of 100,000 signatures.

Davies, the Conservative MP for Shipley, has now spoken to RT, calling Stormzy’s comments “boring” and saying that the star was trying to “look cool” by “being pro-Corbyn”.

“I have no interest in what Stormzy has to say at the Brit Awards about anything political,” Davies said.

“It’s all these sort of left-wing artists playing to the gallery and all the rest of it. It’s boring, isn’t it. You see it all the time, it’s in the BAFTAs [too].”

“It’s all playing to the gallery to try and look cool, all this kind of stuff,” he added. “It’s all part of trying to be trendy and being pro-Corbyn, appealing to the youth because that’s what they think.”

Davies continued: “If a leading politician expressed an opinion about which artist a record label should sign, would anybody be interested in that opinion?”

“Why is his opinion so more informed than anybody else’s, just because he’s a pop artist? Why does that make his opinion on this more important?”

Stormzy’s BRITs performance was widely praised online, with one Twitter user writing at the time: “Stormzy using his platform to call out important issues such as Grenfell Tower (and telling the Daily Mail to suck one) is exactly how it should be done.”

Others called the star the “people’s champ” and “this country’s biggest asset, musically and politically”.

Recently, it was rumoured that Stormzy could be set to perform at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding.
