What John Cena Could Look Like As Duke Nukem

There’s a Duke Nukem movie adaptation on the way, and John Cena has now been confirmed to be attached to the project. Duke was one of the biggest video game characters of the 1990s, particularly with the release of 1996’s Duke Nukem 3D. The first-person shooter exemplified what made the 90s shooter craze so exciting for fans, mixing thrilling action with silly humor and all but cementing its main character’s place in popular culture.

Although Duke Nukem 3D has been ported and re-released on every device under the sun, entirely new releases in the franchise have been hard to come by over the years and most recent release Duke Nukem Forever was seen as a serious misstep for the series. Nonetheless, last year it was confirmed that there was a Duke Nukem movie in the works. What’s more, whispers then began to spread that John Cena was in talks to play Duke himself.

Of course, it’s now been confirmed that John Cena is attached to the Duke Nukem project, and as such many fans of the series (and fans of Cena) have been wondering exactly what Cena would look like as the cigar-chomping hero. Thankfully, there’s a great mock-up of what John Cena could look like as Duke Nukem, courtesy of BossLogic. As seen below, here’s a look at how Cena could pull off that iconic Duke Nukem look, should the movie want to go for a direct adaptation of how the hero looks.

The mock-up does a fantastic job of showcasing what Cena would look like in the lead role of a Duke Nukem movie. After all, Cena certainly has the physique for the role, and some of his previous films – including the likes of The Marine – would not be out of place in a 1990s action movie star’s roster. With that in mind, he may well be a good fit for the movie.

However, some may still be skeptical about whether a Duke Nukem film would necessarily work. The recent release of Tomb Raider has shown that video game movies can pack a punch, but Duke Nukem‘s crude nature and amalgamation of different nineties tropes into one franchise might make a cohesive movie difficult. After all, Duke himself is essentially a Frankenstein’s monster made up of Dirty Harry, Ash from The Evil Dead, and Dolph Lungren, while the character’s outlandish humor fell flat in 2011’s Duke Nukem Forever.

Nonetheless, Cena’s own words certainly give signs of hope here. John Cena has said that he wants to do Duke Nukem justice, while also hinting that tweaks will be required to make Duke as a character work in the modern day. Given that Cena has been savvy about the recent roles he has taken, there’s every chance that intelligent steps could be made to make this adaptation work.
