Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder has confirmed that the sports story Clark Kent was supposed to be covering in the movie was actually about Victor Stone’s football career, before he became Cyborg. The reveal comes in the wake of both Snyder and Cyborg actor Ray Fisher sharing photos from a Justice League scene that featured Victor playing a football game, which was only briefly shown in the final cut of the movie.
Fans who want to believe in the existence, and eventual release, of a “Snyder Cut” of Justice League were buoyed by Fisher and Snyder’s both urging people to “believe” in their photo captions. But perhaps the most interesting thing to emerge from the release of these photos is Snyder’s response to one fan’s comment.

Twitter user UberKryptonian responded to the image of the football scene with a quote from Batman V Superman, and Snyder responded, “someone is paying attention” – confirming a connection between the football scenes in Batman V Superman, and Victor Stone’s football career prior to the terrible accident that set him on the path to becoming Cyborg.
I posted the Perry White quote from BvS on Zack’s latest Justice League post of Cyborg’s football flashback. This is what he wrote back: pic.twitter.com/OapjC6aqZN

The Ultimate Edition of Batman V Superman features a scene in which two cops are watching a football game, as Metropolis’ football team trounces Gotham City 58-0, and a fight subsequently breaks out. In the theatrical cut, Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White instructs Clark to follow up on the game, pitching him the headline “Underdog Dreams Dashed – 10 Yards Between Gotham and Glory.” He later scolds Clark for failing to write the story and instead focusing on Batman. The fact that Snyder filmed a considerable amount of footage for this football game and referenced it multiple times makes it pretty clear that he was trying to subtly weave Victor Stone’s backstory into Batman V Superman.
Of course, the main set-up for Justice League in Batman V Superman ended up being a lot more on-the-nose. Wonder Woman and Batman obtain a collection of files from Lex Luthor that include videos of Cyborg, Aquaman and the Flash, which effectively serve as mini-teasers for Justice League. Given how much the final cut of Justice League was trimmed down, and how much footage was shot in total, it’s safe to say that many of Cyborg’s scenes were on the cutting room floor, and there have been few recent updates on Cyborg’s planned solo movie. Still, like the guys said, it’s important to believe.
Batman V Superman was critically panned upon its release, but many fans have defended the movie and expressed their appreciation for Snyder’s take on the DC universe. Little details like this are a treat for fans who enjoy digging into the movie’s world-building. Perhaps Clark would have paid a bit more attention to the football story he was supposed to covering, if he’d known that he would one day end up on the same team as one of the players.
