Zack Snyder Wants You to Believe in the Snyder Cut

Zack Snyder may have dropped his biggest hint about the existence of the Snyder Cut yet. The road to the release of Justice League is a complicated story, and the full details are still slowly coming out, but the one thing that’s been made abundantly clear is that the Joss Whedon reshoots resulted in a theatrical cut that was completely different from what Zack Snyder originally intended before he was fired from the project.

A number of significant changes were made, including brighter lighting and an over-saturated color palate; the addition of more jokes and one-liners; a new ending that didn’t set up Zack Snyder’s originally planned sequel; Superman was totally reshot (with some wonky CGI to hide Cavill’s reshoot mustache); and chunks of content were totally cut, including lots of scenes seen in the trailers, another Knightmare scene featuring Darkseid, and lots of backstory for new characters like Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg.

While most of the removed footage – reportedly cut to maintain a sub-2 hour runtime – is disappointing to see cut, one of the biggest losses seems to come from Cyborg’s backstory. Originally hyped up as the “heart” of the movie by Zack Snyder, Ray Fisher’s character ended up having very little backstory or character development, mostly existing to service the motherbox plot. In hindsight, he may have been sending a message when he ripped his shirt open at Comic-Con to reveal an “I <3 ZS” message on another shirt underneath.

Now, Ray Fisher has posted an image from one of Justice League’s deleted scenes to the social network Vero True Social. The scene in question is from the football game seen in early trailers, which only briefly made it onto one of Cyborg’s holograms in the movie. Considering a little stadium being built on a soundstage to shoot this scene, it’s doubtful the plan was to feature it so little in the final product. Along with the image, Fisher included a message “Life doesn’t always go how we plan it. The only thing we can do is keep reaching for what we believe. #BORGLIFE #LoveRay”

The message seems fairly innocuous, but given the context provided by the included image, it’s not hard to assume he’s referring to the disappointment of how his role was changed in Justice League. The second half could easily be a simple motivational call to “believe,” in general, but again, there might be an implication that he’s telling fans to “believe” in the possibility of a Snyder Cut. It’d be easy to rule that last part out, if it weren’t for the fact that Snyder then immediately posted another shot from that same scene, tagging  Fisher and saying “Believe. #BORGLIFE.”

There’s been a lot of debate over the actual status of the Snyder Cut and whether it was complete enough before Snyder was fired to ever be released, but Snyder has repeatedly teased elements of the cut that diverge from Joss Whedon’s theatrical cut by either posting images from deleted scenes or answering fan questions on Vero, so it seems like Zack himself believes it can happen, and Ray Fisher may also be a believer now, too.

What we do know is that Snyder completed principal photography for Justice League and was well underway with post-production, achieving picture lock, some digital intermediate color correction work, ADR, and some VFX were completed. The Snyder Cut may or may not be 100% complete, but-but the work necessary to wrap it up isn’t nearly as significant as many people have assumed, so it’s understandable why Snyder would want people to “believe,” having spent nearly a decade of his life on the road to this movie and Justice League 2, only to have it taken away from him at the last minute.

If Snyder’s confidence in the matter is any indicator, it’s possible we could be hearing more about the status of the project soon, if not just seeing more social media teases. Warner Bros. is likely the biggest obstacle to getting the movie completed and distributed, but with most of the DC films administration having been replaced since Snyder was fired, it’s possible the situation has changed and he’ll get official backing to finish his project. All we can do is wait and see.
