While Modern Family‘s days of winning the Emmy for best comedy series ended years ago, the long-running ABC sitcom managed to score an Emmy nomination for the top comedy series category since it debuted in 2009. But for its current season, the show failed to land an Emmy nomination in major categories (it was nominated for best sound mixing), marking the end of an era for the series.
Also shut out despite getting Emmy nominations in previous years were Real Time With Bill Maher, Arrested Development, Episodes, Fargo, Ray Donovan, Transparent and Orange Is the New Black.
While The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel followed up its Golden Globes success with multiple Emmy nominations, fellow new series that got multiple Globes noms were not as fortunate: Both SMILF and The Good Doctor failed to earn any Emmy nominations.
While Game of Thrones earned 22 nominations, stars Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington failed to earn acting nods.
Although Looming Tower star Jeff Daniels was nominated for best actor in a limited series, the show itself, believed to be a favorite for a nomination, failed to get a best limited series nod. Additionally, its one best supporting actor nomination went to Michael Stuhlbarg, and expected nominees Peter Sarsgaard and Tahar Rahim were left out of the running.
Ozark, similarly, earned a nod for star Jason Bateman but not for the series as a whole. Killing Eve star Sandra Oh was nominated, but the series itself didn’t land a nomination. Showtime’s Twin Peaks revival earned nine nominations but not one for best limited series. Al Pacino was not nominated for Paterno, but the HBO film did score a best TV movie nomination as well as one for director Barry Levinson.
Other notable snubs include ongoing omissions from the best variety talk series category for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night With Seth Meyers, although both were recognized in other categories.
Longtime Emmy favorite Homeland landed three nominations but not one for best drama series or star Claire Danes.
Will and Grace was once an Emmys darling, with all of its stars winning Emmys over its original eight-season run. But this year, the reboot’s only nomination in major categories was a best supporting actress nod for Megan Mullally. No nomination for best comedy series or for stars Debra Messing, Eric McCormack and Sean Hayes. The NBC revival earned four more lower-profile nominations.
The following stars of Emmy-nominated series also failed to earn acting noms: Cristin Milioti (Black Mirror: USS Callister), Zach Galifianakis (Baskets), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), Alison Brie (GLOW), Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), J.K. Simmons (Counterpart) and Mandy Moore and Chrissy Metz (This Is Us).
While ABC ended its Emmys campaign for Roseanne following the show’s cancellation after star Roseanne Barr’s racist Valerie Jarrett tweet, the stars of the revival were still eligible for Emmy nominations but only Laurie Metcalf scored an acting nomination.
Other surprising omissions include no directing or supporting actor nominations for The Americans and no writing, directing or series nods for Better Things.
