Noms include ‘SNL’s’ production designer of all 43 seasons, and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ sound editors.
This year’s Creative Arts Emmy nominees include some notable names and familiar faces, including some Emmy vets and Oscar winners. Here are some of the names to watch.
Production designer Eugene Lee, who was born in 1939 and has been with SNL since it debuted in 1975, earned his 14th Emmy nomination for the series. He has two previous wins.
Several Academy Award winners or nominees are also in contention for Emmys.
Oscar-winning composer Mychael Danna (Life of Pi) is a double Emmy nominee for Alias Grace, for which he is nominated alongside his brother and frequent collaborator, Jeff Danna (music composition for a limited series, movie or special), and for The Last Tycoon (main title theme music).
Craig Mann, an Oscar winner for Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash, is Emmy-nominated for sound mixing for miniseries Waco, alongside fellow rerecording mixer Laura Wiest and production mixer David Brownlow.
Supervising sound editors Matthew Wood and David Acord earned an Emmy nomination for Star Wars Rebels: A World Between Worlds. Both are Oscar nominees and previously collaborated on Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens.
Godless delivered Emmy nominations to eight-time Oscar-nominated supervising sound editor Wylie Stateman (Deepwater Horizon), who served as co-supervising sound editor with Eric Hoehn on the Netflix series. The nominated team also includes sound effects designer Harry Cohen, who received the Motion Picture Sound Editors Career Achievement Award in 2017.
Double nominees in the creative arts categories include cinematographer Christian Sprenger, who will compete against himself in the category for a single-camera half-hour series. He’s nominated for his work on Atlanta and GLOW.
Similarly, Kyle Reiter is a double nominee in the category for single-camera picture editing in a comedy series. That includes an episode of Atlanta and an episode of Barry.
Editor Joe Beshenkovsky will also compete against himself, in the category for picture editing in a nonfiction program. He’s nominated for Jane, alongside Brett Morgen and Will Znidaric, and for The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling, for which he is also nominated for nonfiction series as an exec producer.
Game of Thrones has a trio of editing nominees, including past Emmy winners for the series Katie Weiland and Tim Porter. Also nominated for editing the HBO drama is Crispin Green.
