‘Game of Thrones’ was the most nominated program, but HBO, for the first time in 18 years, did not lead the pack. Plus how the studios fared.
For the first time in 18 years, there is a new leader at the top of the most nominated network list at the Primetime Emmys as streaming behemoth Netflix on Thursday collected 112 total nominations, topping HBO’s 108 and delivering a loud statement on the state of the industry in the Peak TV world.
Last year, HBO garnered 111 noms to lead the pack, besting Netflix’s 91. Those fortunes were erased this year, despite the fact that HBO’s Game of Thrones was the most nominated series (22), with the pay cabler’s Westworld tying NBC’s Saturday Night Live for second place with 21 overall.
“HBO is very pleased with its 108 nominations, especially the wide range over so many categories. We’re grateful to all our nominees for making this the eighth year we’ve had 100 nominations or more. We look forward to Sept. 17th,” HBO said in a statement.
Netflix’s most nominated program was The Crown (13), with Godless and Stranger Things close behind with 12 apiece. Working in the streamer’s favor was the fact that HBO did not have a strong limited series to compete in the category that saw Big Little Lies sweep the genre last year.
“We congratulate our creative partners on their unprecedented success today, garnering Netflix a leading 112 nominations,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement. “We are particularly enthused to see the breadth of our programming celebrated with nominations spread across 40 new and returning titles which showcase our varied and expansive slate — comedies, dramas, movies, limited series, documentary, variety, animation and reality.”
