Alex Turner says he ‘likes the idea that he’d be making music’ in 40 years’ time

Could Arctic Monkeys be the next Rolling Stones?

Arctic Monkeys‘ Alex Turner has said that he likes the idea that he’d be making music when he’s in his 70s – ‘whether that’s Arctic Monkeys tunes or not’.

The band released their sixth studio album, ‘Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino’ earlier this year (May 11). The LP went to Number One on the Official UK Albums Chart and has since been nominated for the Hyundai Mercury Music Prize.

Speaking of making music in 40 years time, drummer Matt Helders told Beats 1’s Matt Wilkinson, “I don’t know if I can play drums like this in 40 years time.”

Frontman Alex Turner added: “I like the idea that I’d be making music, whether we’d be playing those tunes or not.”

Helders then continued: “Imagine being 70 and being in a band called Arctic Monkeys, that’s the hardest thing for me to come to terms with.”

While appearing on the show, Turner and Helders revealed their top five favourite songs.

Their selection of lounge classics, cinematic soundscapes, ambience, European indie and Yorkshire soul gives quite the insight into the band’s listening habits and inspiration during the creation of their acclaimed 2018 album ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino‘.

The band’s choices were:

The Nude Party – ‘Chevrolet Van’
Leon Russell – ‘Shootout At The Plantation’
Juniore – ‘À la plage’
Ennio Morricone – ‘Una Spiaggia a Mezzogiorno’
Joe Cocker – ‘Just Like a Woman’

They also recalled the time they found out their 2005 hit single ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’ reached Number One in the UK.

“I would definitely categorise that as a moment that felt unreal at the time,” Turner said of the song’s success. “We all went to the pub near where we’d grown up and they announced that it was the Number One record. They put the radio on in the pub and everyone just jumped up. Everybody was there – on the pool table [cheering].”
