Kanye West booked for ‘SNL’ because Ariana Grande dropped out

‘SNL’ creator Lorne Michaels confirmed the pop star was planned to be the new season’s first musical guest

Kanye West reportedly wasn’t the first choice to appear on the first episode of the new season of Saturday Night Live.

The rapper is set to star as the musical guest when the long-running US comedy show returns tomorrow night (September 28).

However, SNL creator Lorne Michaels has revealed West was only booked after their planned guest pulled out. Speaking on the Origins With James Andrew Miller podcast recently, Michaels said: “We had Ariana [Grande] drop out for emotional reasons two days ago. That’s our premiere, and then Kanye stepped up, and he’ll be there.” Listen to the moment at 52:26 below.

Grande took to Twitter last night (September 27) to tell her fans she was having “a tough month”. “i’m trying to get my work done and get back to normal and it’s hard and i’m human and tired,” she said in response to one follower. “sorry i let u in or worried u. i shouldn’t have tweeted. i kno better.”

Later, she added: “can i pls have one okay day. just one. pls.” The singer’s ex-boyfriend Mac Miller died earlier this month from a suspected overdose.

Meanwhile, West will release a new album to coincide with his SNL appearance. According to the rapper, ‘Yandhi’ will feature controversial rappers 6ix9ine and XXXTentacion, alongside Ty Dolla $ign. The star has also said he is trying to get Rihanna to sing a hook on one track.

In a recent Instagram post, West defended A$AP Bari after he was accused of sexual assault and said he regretted not standing up for XXXTentacion before his death.
