Metallica cover Garbage’s ‘Stupid Girl’ on the opening night of their North American tour

The metal legends opened their tour in Madison, Wisconsin, where Garbage formed in 1993

Metallica kicked off the North American leg of their ‘WorldWired’ tour on Sunday (September 2) in Madison, Wisconsin and included a cover of Garbage’s ‘Stupid Girl’ in the show.

The cover appeared to pay tribute to the fact Garbage formed in Madison in 1993. After hearing about the performance, Garbage tweeted: “fucking love @Metallica”.

Recently, on their European tour, Metallica also covered songs by local musical heroes each night, including ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’ and A-ha’s ‘Take On Me.’

The band played an 18-song set made up of predominantly of new songs from their most recent album, ‘Hardwired…To Self Destruct’.

Classic songs such as ‘Seek & Destroy’, ‘Master of Puppets’ and ‘Enter Sandman’ were included in the set, as was ‘Cyanide’ – the first time the song has been played in three years. The band also covered The Misfits’ ‘Last Caress’.

On their website before the show, the band also said that recordings from each gig would be available to fans soon after each show as a free download.

They wrote: “As we like to do, all shows will be recorded and available in a variety of downloadable formats, as well as on CD, within a few days of us walking off the stage.

“Each show is mixed and mastered by the team behind ‘Hardwired…To Self-Destruct’ and now, even better, every 2018/19 North American ticket includes a FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD of the show(s) you attend.”

After the shows, fans can scan or type the barcode of their tickets into a link on the band’s website to download the show they attended.

Last week, (August 30), the band announced that they were launching their own brand of whiskey called ‘Blackened’ which they are billing as “the next evolution of whiskey.”

The band reportedly used a unique, patent-pending “sonic enhancement” process known as ‘Black Noise’ to “shape” the whiskey’s flavour. This involved using custom playlists of Metallica’s music – a different one for each batch – during the distilling process.
