Why Doesn’t Bird Box Ever Show the Creatures?

One of the more divisive aspects of Bird Box, Netflix’s latest horror film and a veritable meme factory, is the fact that we never get to find out much about the creatures that invade earth at the start of the film, forcing any human being who lays eyes on them to instantly commit suicide in grisly fashion — not even what they look like, or where they came from. For horror fans who prefer a more concrete ending (or plot in general, let’s be real), Bird Box wraps up on a pretty frustrating note. That’s what makes the revelation that a deleted scene actually showing the creatures exists all the more interesting.

During an interview with Bloody Disgusting, the cast and crew of the film revealed that the monsters we hear banging around outside of homes, cars, and rickety canoes almost made it into the movie. According to screenwriter Eric Heisserer, one of the film’s producers felt that at least one of the creatures should be shown. A crazy sequence involving the lead character played by Sandra Bullock, Malorie, was whipped up, but in the end, the scene was removed from the final cut. Fortunately, Bullock explained exactly what went down in the shot:

“It was a green man with a horrific baby face. It was snake-like, and I was like, ‘I don’t want to see it when it first happens. Just bring it into the room. We’ll shoot the scene.’ I turn and he’s like [growling at me.] It’s making me laugh. It was just a long fat baby.”

A “long fat baby,” huh? Suddenly I’m very, very glad that the creative powers behind Bird Box decided against including that sequence.

The film was directed by Susanne Bier, and Heisserer adapted the story from Josh Malerman’s bestselling novel of the same name. The horror film finds Bullock playing pregnant Malorie, who loses her sister (Sarah Paulson) to the strange creatures and then finds refuge amid the chaos in a home with a quirky collection of fellow survivors. Trevante Rhodes, John Malkovich, Lil Rel Howery, B.D. Wong, Danielle Mcdonald, and Tom Hollander costar.
