BRIT Awards host Jack Whitehall criticised for “disrespectful” Little Mix joke

“Dads up and down the country are awkwardly fumbling for a scatter cushion.”

BRIT Awards host Jack Whitehall has been criticised as “disrespectful” after making a close-to-the-knuckle gag about Little Mix last night.

After the pop group performed recent single ‘Woman Like Me’, Whitehall quipped: “Dads up and down the country are awkwardly fumbling for a scatter cushion right now.”

While the gag seemingly received a warm reception inside The O2 Arena, the reaction among viewers was altogether more divided.

One viewer wrote on Twitter: “Jack Whitehall’s comments after Little Mix’s performance, reducing them to sex symbols that exist to satisfy men. Gross. It’s 2019. He is cancelled.”

Another hit out at Whitehall for failing to read the room, with the gag coming shortly after The 1975’s Matty Healy blasted misogyny in music as the band scooped the prize for Best British Band.

“Jack Whitehall’s comments after Little Mix’s performance, reducing them to sex symbols that exist to satisfy men. Gross. It’s 2019. He is cancelled,” they wrote.

A third said: “Just goes to show the society we live in and why we need feminism: You have The 1975 trying to address misogyny in the music industry and then Jack Whitehall joking about dads hiding their hard-on after Little Mix perform…”

Meanwhile, the ceremony faced another controversy after viewers noticed an advert revealing The 1975’s victory, some two hours before the ceremony aired.

The gaffe came in the form of a brief advert on UKTV Play, which correctly said that the band would pick up awards for Best British Album and Best British Band.
