Richard D. James has been teasing his return of late
Aphex Twin has announced his new EP, ‘Collapse’, after teasing the record online and around the world, and has shared its first track, ‘T69 Collapse’.
The record follows 2016’s ‘Cheetah‘ EP, which was the electronic musician’s last release. In a three-star review, NME said: “Cheetah’ isn’t bad, but it could be the work of a lesser producer. In this respect at least, Aphex Twin remains an enigma. After all, you don’t come out of retirement to be ordinary.”
Fans began speculating the producer, whose real name is Richard D. James, was about to return when a 3D version of his logo appeared on the walls of London’s Elephant & Castle tube station, as well as other locations across the world including New York and Los Angeles. Earlier this week, a tweet from James’ label, Warp Records, revealed the title of the record.

Now, the EP has been officially announced. ‘Collapse’ will be released on September 14, via Warp. A video for the first track, titled ‘T69 Collapse’, has been shared online. The clip was due to premiere on Adult Swim but was pulled at the last minute after it failed the Harding Test, which helps decide whether videos may cause a reaction in people suffering from photosensitive epilepsy.

Aphex Twin’s last full-length release came in the form of 2014’s ‘Syro‘. It was well-received by critics and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, but lost out to Benjamin Clementine’s ‘At Least For Now’. The album was 13 years in the making following 2001’s ‘Drukqs‘.
An in-depth documentary, called ‘The Cult Of Aphex Twin’, aired on BBC Radio Four last month. The programme aimed to shine a light on the long-standing mysteries and rumours surrounding the artist, including that he once lived in a bank vault in the middle of the Elephant & Castle roundabout.
