The pop star released her self-titled debut album last year to huge success
Dua Lipa has revealed she’s been working with Max Martin and said her second album has to be “a new chapter in my life.”
The pop star released her self-titled debut album last year. In a four-star review, NME said: “It’s […] impressive to hear how confidently the debut holds itself together, flitting between styles but always shining a spotlight on a legitimate pop sensation. She’s the real deal.”
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Lipa said she had already started working on the follow-up. “Whenever I have a couple days free I go to the studio,” she said. “It also kind of helps me to get away from tour life and all the travelling and stuff, it makes me feel really grounded.”
Of Swedish producer and hitmaker Martin, who was worked with the likes of Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, and Adele, the singer said: “His attention to detail and the way he writes songs, there is a kind of theory to the pop and the way I write songs is very spontaneous. It was interesting to work and learn from someone who is so amazing and so inspiring that’s done this for many, many years.” She added she may work more with Martin on material for her second album.
The new material Lipa has been working on has been influenced by Prince, Outkast, and Gnarls Barkley, and the star said the songs had “some throwback elements.” “I’m excited about [that] cos it’s a new direction for me and I’m looking forward to it.”
In regards to how her new fame will affect her songwriting, she explained: “It has to kind of be a new chapter in my life. I want the art to be subjective. Another thing about being in the public eye: a lot of people have speculations – who’s this song about? Or what’s this about? – and, of course, I’m not going to stop being honest about my music, regardless of the amount of attention the first album’s had, and I guess I have had, in a way.
“It’s just they’re all songs that leave enough room for subjection, that you can take the song and make it your own and it doesn’t necessarily have the same meaning for you as it does for me.”
Meanwhile, Lipa has collaborated with Silk City, the disco-house project of Mark Ronson and Diplo, on an upcoming track called ‘Electricity’. “It’s something different, but it does lead into some of the new music that I’m going to bring in my albums,” she said of the song.
