The first look at Brie Larson’s costume in Captain Marvel wasn’t quite what people were expecting, but that shouldn’t worry fans according to one Marvel Studios artist. In January, a handful of photos from the set of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s Captain Marvel leaked online and revealed the first look at Larson as Carol Danvers, which surprised many fans. Larson’s suit was green and resembled a Kree military uniform more than her traditional, red-and-gold Captain Marvel uniform.
Several theories sprung up shortly after the photos leaked online as to why Larson’s Carol Danvers was wearing a green suit instead of her classic costume. One of the most common theories is that Carol is wearing the green suit as both a callback to the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell (Jude Law), and because it’s the first suit she sees after gaining her powers. In that case, she either finds it laying around somewhere or she takes it from a fallen Kree soldier. Another possibility is that Mar-Vell gifts the suit to Carol as she comes into her own as a superhero. While there are many reasons why Carol could be wearing a Kree uniform in the set photos, what’s clear is that it’s not her final costume. And now, one Marvel artist wants to reiterate that fact.

In an interview with ComicBook, Marvel Studios concept artist Andy Park briefly discussed the leaked Captain Marvel set photos. He tried to alleviate fans’ reservations about the costume (and perhaps the film) by claiming that they will be “happy” with the final result, which should be closer to the source material if we’re going based on previous reveals.
“I think it’s always funny seeing people’s reaction… People are so ready to jump on and to react and make decisions so quickly. I would just say I would hope that they would just know from the past that judging too quickly is … How do I word this? They’re going to be happy. I think they’re going to be happy. I mean, Kevin Feige said it in an interview. We revealed the concept art that I did, myself and other artists did, of Captain Marvel at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, so I mean, I think that alone should hopefully alleviate some of those fears that people have.”
Last year, Marvel revealed a handful of details regarding their upcoming films at San Diego Comic-Con, including that Captain Marvel will be set in the 1990s and officially introduce the Skrulls into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it was later revealed that Samuel L. Jackson would be reprising his role as Nick Fury in the 2019 film. However, one thing that was shown to Comic-Con attendees, yet wasn’t immediately released to the general public, was concept art of Larson in Captain Marvel’s classic suit. Interestingly enough, Park himself ended up posting a low-res version of the concept art online a few weeks later in August.
Unfortunately, fans are still waiting on that concept art to be released officially – in hi-res – but with Captain Marvel expected to start filming in California this month (after first filming a handful of scenes in January in order to retain Marvel’s $20.7 million tax incentive), they may have to wait until the studio decides to release the official first look at Larson as Captain Marvel later down the line, perhaps around this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. But it’s worth noting that it’s uncommon for Marvel’s heroes to wear starter costumes before they end up with their official, comic book-inspired suits at later points. Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man both started out with homemade-style suits, so there’s no reason Larson’s Carol Danvers can’t do the same… but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
