The network ties CBS for the night, driven by ‘Big Bang’ — albeit at a season low.
Taking a page from NBC’s ever-expanding Dick Wolf universe, ABC dropped its first-ever Shondaland crossover night.
Shonda Rhimes’ trio of dramas featured two crossovers of sort, with Grey’s Anatomy spinoff Station 19 getting a planted story in the parent series, and Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder fully sharing narratives in back-to-back episodes — including shared scenes between Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Viola Davis (Murder). It translated to big gains for both, including a season high 1.1 rating among 18-49 for Murder. Scandal naturally performed a little better at 9 p.m., up to a 1.3 rating in the key demo — but it was Grey’s Anatomy that won the night for the network. It averaged an even 2.0 rating among adults 18-49.
So strong was the Rhimes block, it tied typically dominant CBS for demo bragging rights for the night. It’s nearing the dog days of the season, however, so The Big Bang Theory tied a season low 2.5 rating among adults 18-49. Young Sheldon (2.1 adults), Mom (1.5 adults), Life in Pieces (1.1 adults) and SWAT (0.9 adults) followed.
New episodes of Superstore (1.0 adults) and Will & Grace (1.1 adults) held reasonably well on NBC, while two episodes of AP Bio (0.8 and 0.7 adults) posted smaller returns. Chicago Fire was up a hair with a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49.
Gotham posted a 0.8 rating in the key demo on Fox, while Showtime at the Apollo slinked in with a 0.6 rating.
On the CW, Supernatural (0.6 adults) and Arrow (0.5 adults) were both steady.
