Here’s an eerie new song from Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood

Radiohead‘s Jonny Greenwood has shared the first song from his score for the film You Were Never Really Here.

The movie was directed by We Need To Talk About Kevin filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, and stars Joaquin Phoenix and Dante Pereira-Olson. A synopsis of the film reads: “A war veteran’s attempt to save a young girl from a sex trafficking ring goes horribly wrong.”

Greenwood’s score will be released on March 9 – the same day the film arrives in cinemas in the UK – via Invada Records and Lakeshore Records. It will be available digitally at first, with a physical edition to follow at an unconfirmed time.

On Twitter, the musician called ‘Dark Streets’ a “cue from the soundtrack” and added the whole score “is a mixture of string music, electric guitar and some sparse rhythms – like this one”.

Greenwood has previously worked on film soundtracks numerous times for director Paul Thomas Anderson, notably for There Will Be Blood, The Master and Inherent Vice, the latter of which also starred Phoenix. 

He teamed up with Anderson again recently for Phantom Thread, for which he received his first Oscar nomination for Best Original Score.

Greenwood recently confirmed that he would attend the Oscars ceremony. Discussing his possible attendance on the Adam Buxton podcast, he said: “My wife thinks it’s quite ridiculous. But then I realised I was quite pleased with myself at the idea of not going, and I think it’s always good to resist that kind of urge, that sort of smirk. So maybe do the opposite to that impulse…. [But] no one wants to see sweaty version of me, shambling around, looking embarrassed. Amusing Paul, I think, is the main goal. Whatever entertains him.”
