Andy Samberg was greeted with big laughs at Saturday’s Spirit Awards with his rendition of Simple Minds’ “Don’t You Forget About Me,” reminding indie actors of their roots in case they go on to star in blockbusters — but he wasn’t able to grace the stage at the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday.
This was apparently due to Samberg’s comedy troupe, The Lonely Island, writing a song that was impossible to produce.
“We wrote a song for this year’s Oscars that was overly ambitious (expensive and a logistical nightmare), so it wasn’t produced, but here is a demo storyboard version for your enjoyment!” The Lonely Island wrote in a tweet.
The “demo” video opens with scrolling text expanding on the tweet, adding: “All vocals and visuals are temp, so please use your imagination and enjoy!”
Titled “Why Not Me?” the video features photos of various characters from recent films — Thor, Pennywise the clown, Lady Bird and Wonder Woman — along with captions instead of anybody actually speaking, and of course, singing. The lyrics question why stars from those blockbuster movies weren’t nominated for an Oscar.
