Beth Behrs to Star in Lee Daniels’ Fox Comedy

The ‘2 Broke Girls’ grad will play the female lead in ‘Our People.’

Beth Behrs is making a new home at Fox.

The 2 Broke Girls grad has been tapped to star in the network’s Lee Daniels comedy pilot Our People.

Based on the Israeli format Nevsu: A Young Multi-Cultural Couple, the comedy revolves around a man from a bombastic African family who don’t have a word in their native language for “privacy,” and his fiancee from a Midwestern family as they try to build a normal life together. Although nobody can agree what that “normal” means.

Behrs is set as the female lead, Jenny, described as a Midwestern firecracker and Abel’s (uncast) fiancée.

Vali Chandrasekaran (Modern Family, 30 Rock) penned the script for the single-camera comedy and exec produces alongside Daniels, Pam Williams, Marc Velez, Yossi Vassa, Shai Ben-Atar, Liat Shavit and Trent O’Donnell, the latter of whom will direct the pilot. Lea Thompson (Back to the Future) co-stars as the mother to Behrs’ Jenny. From Endemol Shine and 20th Century Fox Television, Our People is Daniels’ first comedy pilot order for the latter studio where he produces Fox’s Empire and Star.

The casting marks Behrs’ follow-up role to CBS’ 2 Broke Girls, which was canceled last year after a six-season run. Both Behrs and her former 2 Broke Girls co-star Kat Dennings received multiple offers this pilot season. Dennings signed on to star in ABC’s How May We Hate You. Behrs recently returned to CBS and 2 Broke Girls producer Warner Bros. Television for a guest role on The Big Bang Theory this season. Her feature credits include a voice role in Monsters University and indie comedy Hello, My Name Is Dori. She’s repped by CAA, Anonymous Content and Hirsch Wallerstein.
