‘The Voice’: Blind Auditions Continue to Heat Up

Alicia Keys had a particularly good night.

Season 14’s Blind Auditions continued on The Voice tonight. Coaches Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine all vied for artists. Heading into the night, Clarkson and Levine still had their blocks left for the round, giving them a slight advantage.

The first artist up was Christiana Danielle, who sang “Hotline Bling” by Drake. The daughter of a Christian rapper, Danielle came from a musical family. It was an interesting rendition of the hit that showcased a strong sense of artistry. Levine turned first, followed shortly by Clarkson and Keys. Clarkson suggested that Danielle had what it takes to win the whole show. But the artist ultimately joined Team Alicia.

Next up was Brett Hunter singing “She’s A Bad mama” by Carl Carlton, accompanying himself on the ukulele. It was another original cover, but it didn’t quite catch the coaches’ ears in the same way Danielle’s did. Shelton was the only coach to turn, so Hunter joined Team Blake by default.

An artist named Jamai followed with a performance of “U Got It Bad” by Usher. He had a gorgeous tone and impressive technical skills, which he backed with a lot of emotion. Clarkson and Keys both pressed their buttons. Jamai would have been a solid fit on either team, but he went with Keys, who was already having a good night.

The next artist, Mitch Cardoza, failed to turn any chairs with his performance of “No Woman No Cry” by Bob Marley.

Mia Boostrom turned things around with her alluring cover of Zayn’s “Pillowtalk.” She had a textured voice and sounded particularly strong on the low notes. Levine was the only coach to turn, and he called her the “best one-chair turn” of season 14. She joined Team Adam by default.

Next was Jackie Foster, singing “What About Us” by Pink. It was a powerful performance that showcased impressive range. Clarkson and Keys, on similar wavelengths tonight, both turned for her. Foster joined Team Kelly.

Kayla Woodson’s straightforward country performance of “Turn On The Radio” by Reba McEntire did not turn any chairs.

Reid Umstattd’s performance of “Take Me To The Pilot” by Elton John, however, caught the attention of both Keys and Levine. He had a solid lyrical interpretation and, while he didn’t quite eclipse Elton John on a performance level, he exhibited confidence on stage. Keys called his voice powerful, but he joined Team Adam, which was definitely the right fit for him.

Next up, Jorge Eduardo sang a cover of the wildly popular “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. It was a fun and innovative rendition that made it sound like the song was his own. Clarkson turned immediately, but the other coaches didn’t follow suit. He joined Team Kelly by default.

Artists Jamella and Angel Bonilla got the montage treatment, so their performances didn’t make it to air. Jamella joined Team Kelly, and Bonilla joined Team Adam.

Austin Giorgio’s performance of “How Sweet It Is” by Marvin Gaye brought crooner vibes to The Voice stage. He cited Frank Sinatra as an influence, and that definitely came through in his performance. He got turns from Clarkson and Shelton, and it was a little surprising Levine didn’t turn. Even though he doesn’t necessarily fit Team Blake’s usual country sound, Giorgio picked Shelton as his coach.

The last artist to audition tonight was Johnny Bliss, singing “Preciosa” by Marc Antony. It was by far the best performance of the night, as the closing performances tend to be. Bliss put a lot of power and emotion behind his vocal. He may be the best artist of the season so far. Levine turned first, but he was soon followed by the other coaches. Clarkson was pushed out though, blocked by Levine. It didn’t work out in his favor though. Bliss joined Team Alicia.

The Blind Auditions continue tomorrow night on NBC. What did you think of tonight’s performances?
