Marvel Studios Honors Female Characters On International Women’s Day

Marvel honors their female characters on International Women’s Day. Over the years, Marvel Studios has been chastised about the lack of diversity in the MCU. While female characters have been existing in the franchise, they were mostly there to serve the main male hero. Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow was the only female traditional superhero in the movie, and even she was mostly cast aside to give way to her male counterparts. But times are changing, and Marvel knows this. They either have to up their game in terms of gender and racial diversity if they want their audience to continue supporting their films.

Starting in late Phase 2, Marvel has been slowly populating their cinematic universe with more strong female superheroes. The introduction of Guardians of the Galaxy‘s badasses Gamora, Nebula, and Mantis, Thor: Ragnarok‘s Valkyrie and the soon-to-be-introduced The Wasp and Captain Marvel, not to mention a whole army of warriors with Black Panther‘s Dora Milaje led by Okoye, establish that the MCU is ready for more women in their stories. And similar to their male power players, they are given equal importance.

So in celebration of International Women’s Day, Marvel Russia took it to their official Twitter account to pay tribute to the many women of the MCU via a short montage. In it, we see Black Widow, Pepper Potts, Scarlett Witch among others. Interestingly, however, out of all the other regional Marvel social media accounts, including its main channels (Marvel Studios, Marvel Entertainment), the Russian account is the only that posted said video. Thompson famously said that women will reign supreme in MCU’s Phase 4. With talks about an all-female ensemble film seemingly favored by Marvel Studios head honcho, Kevin Feige, chances are that we’ll see the project down the road for the franchise – hopefully, sooner than later. The company president has been open on his regrets about DC beating them in putting out a female headlined blockbuster with Patty Jenkins/Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, but they can one them up with this idea. Picking the film’s narrative, however, will be especially tricky as Marvel will have to find a way to gather up all their female power players and explain why none of their male ones are present in the debacle. It’s one of the many downsides of an interconnected film series, but we’re confident that if anyone can pull it off, its Marvel Studios. Additionally, the long-delayed Widow standalone is also officially moving forward with Jac Schaeffer.

With the general viewing audience more mindful of casting diversity and giving equal opportunities to all, big studios like Marvel are prompted to give equal opportunities to every actor, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation or race. The comics provide endless character and story inspiration that can be adapted to the big screen, so there really is no excuse for marginalized groups to be represented on media. If anything, the box office success of Wonder Woman and Black Panther have squashed myths about the kind of content Hollywood wants. If it’s a good movie, chances are that people will go and see it.
