Adam Sandler has been a regular presence in the world of comedy filmmaking for over 20 years, occasionally even detouring into more dramatic territory, but in recent years, the actor/screenwriter/producer has set up shop at Netflix. He signed a four-picture deal with the streaming service in late 2014, and in addition to delivering three of those comedies, he also starred in Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories. The last movie in Sandler’s Netflix deal, The Week Of, arrives next month, but it doesn’t look like the actor’s partnership with the company is ending after that, as Sandler is gearing up to re-team with Jennifer Aniston for a murder mystery movie called, well, Murder Mystery.
The last time Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston worked together was in 2011’s Just Go With It, which was critically panned, but performed well at the box office, making $215 million off an $80 million budget. Now according to The Tracking Board, the two are set to star in Murder Mystery, which was originally in development at The Weinstein Company’s Dimension Films division and is now being set up as a Netflix exclusive release. Murder Mystery will see Sandler playing a New York City cop who finally takes his wife, played by Aniston, on a long-promised European vacation. During their flight, the couple manages to get invited to a family gathering taking place on the fancy yacht belonging to elderly billionaire Malcolm Quince. Unfortunately for Sandler and Aniston’s characters, when Quince is murdered, they quickly become the prime suspects for the crime. The Amazing Spider-Man‘s James Vanderbilt wrote Murder Mystery‘s script, and Game Over, Man!‘s Kyle Newacheck is in talks to direct.
Adam Sandler kicked off his time at Netflix with 2015’s The Ridiculous 6, and while it bombed critically (and that’s putting it mildly), viewing-wise it was a big hit for the service, becoming the most-viewed movie in Netflix history nearly a month after its release. 2016’s The Do-Over and 2017’s Sandy Wexler followed, and if Murder Mystery is anything like its predecessors, then the action-comedy is guaranteed to be packed with ridiculous hijinks fitting Sandler’s skill set. As for Jennifer Aniston, her recent theatrical appearances include the Horrible Bosses movies, Cake (for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination), Mother’s Day and Office Christmas Party, and she will appear later this year in Dumplin’. Given how Sandler and Aniston’s last movie together turned out, it will be interesting to see if Murder Mystery can be a better hit among audiences.
Murder Mystery doesn’t have an assigned release date yet, but stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more casting information and when the movie’s first trailer drops.
